HAPPY BIRTHDAY JIA

Now that I've written about the sad things, I want to remember in words the happy things that happened yesterday. Of course the whole production period was filled with lots of laughs, but I think I always remember production night(s) the best.

Having a SM team that was humble and good natured. When you don't waste your energy getting/trying not to be angry, you have so much fun and ability to deliver. Although with the professionalism, I miss the snarky remarks that Fo and others would make on the cans at times.

"Clubbing" in the girls' dressing room 20 minutes before show time, music courtesy of Nessa's handphone. It was an amazing way to work off the nerves but keep the energy. I don't think I've seen another cast do the same before.

Holding on tight to Judy because she was so nervous.

Serving as a (not so still) statue a la Madame Tussuad's, with an endless stress of jovial camwhorers standing next to me while I was ironing. Shiv's "I want you too, Hong Ling" (which should have been "I want a photo with you, too" in more grammatical terms) becomes a running joke for the rest of the night. I've never been complimented like that, so of course I had to revel a little in the flattery.

The boys attempting to take slutty photos while in costume. (I'm not sure if the girls did the same in their room, seeing as I was managing the guys)

Jun Sheng and I posing for a photo then realising there wasn't a single camera in sight.

Messing with Kit's hair (and proceeding to take photos of it, of course) because none of us could figure out the right amount of gel to use, or the right hair style for that matter. Carynl gamely posing with Ivan's pastel green hairdryer.

The cast really riding on the audience's energy last night. Especially Russell, Amanda and Ivan who blossomed when faced with a full house. I had to try not to laugh too much in the wings.

This has got to be the most appreciative cast I have ever worked with. They are so vocal and sincere in their thanks, and they are the first people who have said to me, "None of this would be possible without the SMs at all, so don't try to deny it."

Ivan sending an sms at some ungodly hour wishing I was there at PPP, and being brotherly when at some point I was more nervous than the cast pre-show.

Russell and I running to embrace in The Deck, both of us being so damn happy to see someone else who shared and remembers the thrill of production. Comforting each other's wallow in post-production withdrawal - somehow no matter how many productions i do, i doubt i will ever become numb to them.

Folks, we HAVE to meet soon! Other than the potluck at Lucas' house. I asked Ivan to initiate something asap.

Taken from our facebook event:

NUS Stage presents It’s Complicated: Five Short Singapore Plays, performed by students of NUS and directed by Checkpoint Theatre’s Huzir Sulaiman. The performance takes the audience through different facets of Singapore life, laying bare its tensions and triumphs. Combining original scripts by NUS playwrights, It’s Complicated sets you thinking with its dark humour and visual austerity. Join us on an enthralling journey of power, gender, politics, and family!

Free admission. Tickets available at the door on a first-come-first-served basis 1 hour before showtime for performances at the University Cultural Centre (UCC), NUS. The audience capacity for UCC Theatre is 400.

Theatresque: Threesome

I have many words of gratitude, but this is only a touch and go, depth will come later.

Gwen & Claire - I think through Theatresque, the two of you have become people I have utmost respect (on top of utmost love) for. The sheer dedication, determination and such talent to put this whole process together without any formal training on theatre management.

Cast - Thanks for the great show, on and more importantly OFFSTAGE. You are a charismatic lot.

Crew - Without you, the performance would be lacking in so many ways. Organisation, atmosphere, etc. Kudos for your saikang, even when people don't appreciate you enough.

Jia, Xin, Shu, Fo, Lizzie, Qian - FOH would be NOTHING without you. Even though it's not your job and you have so much on your plates, you never stopped showing such initiative and willingness. And best of all your unfailing emotional support, cool-headedness which eased my anxiety.

Jian Yang - I'm sorry I turned down your (very tempting) float but thank you for the thought and always offering to carry things.

Bearers of flowers - Jia, Kuangli, Nat, Ray-Shio, Livvy, thank you for literally brightening my night with the vivid colours and soft petals. (JIA/SHU I LOVE YOUR PIE)

(and because I am somewhat emotional)

Disclaimer: Merci, to my close friends who have beeen more than supportive and understanding. For encouraging me, putting up with nonsense, buying tickets, for being apologetic that shake! tickets sold out. I hold you dear to my heart.

If you truly, sincerely want to buy an eighteen year old yours truly a birthday present, then buy a ticket to HTOHL.

There is nothing more I want than to see our immense talent, blood, sweat and tears recognised, enjoyed. It is important to my cca.

I believe acknowledgement is intangible, but those not in the know can/may/will only judge us by sales figures, audience rates. It sucks into a vicious cycle. Bad sales, low turnout last year? Then I better not go this year. (For the record, we filled 70% last year) Add that to the occasional perception that we're a bunch of HP, West-embracing exclusive wannabes.

If you can fork out $8 to buy a cake, a soft toy, half a cd to pleae me, you can definitely fork out the same amount to buy a ticket, with much higher returns.

Do not tell me if you don't intend to go. I do not need to know. Just buy. A golden ticket. To save the souls of the amazing cast, directors and crew who ahve pitched their lives to make this happen. For the souls who love drama, need it like the air you breathe.

SHAKESPEARE 24

A worldwide 24hour event to celebrate Shakespeare’s (supposed) 444th birthday/392nd death anniversary

Dates: 23rd & 24th April 2008 (Weds & Thurs)

Venue: RJC Performing Arts Centre

Time: 7pm

Ticket price: $8

Leave a comment to place orders!

S24 works like this: Each participating country/group puts up a 1 hour version of any of Shakespeare’s plays, and it will be broadcasted “live” for 24 hours. In Singapore though, we’re cheating with 1.5 hours, since each school is putting up a ½ hour play. HC is doing Twelfth Night and RJC is doing A Midsummer Night’s Dream. RI is doing Macbeth.

MY BARE-STRIPT HEART
4th April (next Friday!)
7.30pm
HCI (College) campus, LT3
$4 a ticket

MY BARE-STRIPT HEART is the theme of ELDDFS' second staging of YAWP (Young Adult Writers Perform), an annual poetry performance competition where those under 21 get to bring poetry alive on stage for the chance to win $400 in cold, hard cash. If that doesn't get you up, then there's always the guest readings by Cyril Wong, Marc Nair and Alfian Saat to look forward to. An open mic session will also be held for those of us who don't have performances per se, but would like to read out some poetry anyway :D

What are you waiting for? Get your tickets from Jian Yang or Alan today! (message me for their numbers please) Alternatively, leave a comment on this post and I'll get you a ticket! For you HwaChongians out there, you can refer to the EMB for more information.
